Literacy Achieves (formerly ELM)

Established under the East Dallas Cooperative Parish in 1994, Literacy Achieves (formerly English Language Ministries, ELM) provides quality English instruction as a second language in order to promote responsible self-sufficiency. We are partnered with two other congregations to support Literacy Achieves, which currently resides at East Dallas Christian Church. The students are taught by volunteers, and the program is focused on helping women and children.

Research shows the single greatest indicator of a child’s achievement in school is the literacy level of the mother. Literacy Achieves is open to all races, religions, and cultures; however, 98% of students are Hispanic. The ministry takes students from the lowest literacy levels with the goal of reaching a 5th grade literacy level. Literacy Achieves enrolls roughly 140 adults and 45 children each semester. On average, students attend Literacy Achieves for three years.

Not only do we help Literacy Achieves with our financial support and volunteers, our pastor and three of our members are on the Board of Directors! For more information about this wonderful ministry and how you can support it, please click the link below.
